Mdm Lim’s plans to breastfeed her son for a longer time has plenty of support from staff of SHG’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Neonatal and developmental Medicine. Six months ago, a group of specialists and nurses from the departments initiated a project to promote breastfeeding within the first hour of birth. Since then, SGH has seen breastfeeding among mothers double to 86 per cent.

Mr Joseph Lazar suffered from pain in his right ankle for over a year, and a fall left him unable to walk and his foot in a cast for six weeks. Even three strong injections couldn’t numb the pain.

But his doctor was reluctant to consider surgery to correct his condition, known as Achilles tendonitis, because the 60-year-old had other medical problems that can lead to serious complications.

“Because of my diabetes, it’s dangerous for me to have any open wounds or cuts. They may not heal and I can suffer from massive blood loss,” recounts Mr Lazar.

But when you finally meet someone who steps out of your picture box of colourful shadows in real life for the first time, you can either be pleasantly surprised or horridly shocked.

And so it was that when I met Singapore Idol runner-up, Sylvia Ratonel, for the first time at the media press release of her self-titled debut album Sylvia Ratonel, I was very pleasantly surprised at this young lady’s warmth and grace.
